Careers Services

An important aspect of any senior secondary student's life is planning for the future and the world of work.

The first step after school may entail further study - full or part-time, entering the workforce, or a combination of both, or taking time out to pursue other interests. Research into the future world of work indicates that people in the employment market can expect to have three to five major career changes in their working life. These changes may be interspersed with periods of study, retraining or non-work activities. Staff involved in advising students about future pathways must be fully aware of the study options available and changing labour market trends.

The Careers Counselllors

At Ivanhoe Grammar School, Mrs Maria Staikos (TRC) and Mrs Natalie Hutchings (Plenty) are the Careers and Course advisers. Their major responsibilities are to prepare the students to make the best-informed decisions possible at the end of their secondary education and to ensure a smooth and successful transition into their life after school. As a school of choice, the success of students tertiary placements highlights the opportunities which are available to students at Ivanhoe Grammar School. Unlike some schools, their time allocation is fully dedicated to Career and Course counselling. The role of the Careers Counsellor, is one which is very much part of a team involving the student, parents, teachers and level managers/pastoral heads, acting in partnership, to achieve successful transition outcomes.

The Careers advisers offer specialist help in advising, informing and counselling students on their course of study and career choices. This is achieved through regular individual interviews, group presentations or in classroom sessions.  A number of speakers are invited to the school each year including institutional and professional alumni to assist students with career planning. The Careers Adviser also works closely with other members of the school staff involved in personal development and pastoral care. This includes advising on changes and developments in tertiary education, training and employment sectors; informing the team of changes in subject prerequisites; developing careers education for use in pastoral sessions that cover the four main tenets of opportunity awareness, self-awareness, decision-making and implementation of the career planning process. The work is varied and demanding and constantly changing, as is the world of work our students are entering.

Students are encouraged to take ownership of their individual career planning and to access the wealth of resources available to them, thus being well equipped to explore their career pathways.
